Fun games to play with bean bags

You can have a lot of fun playing with the simple but versatile bean bag. As a parent, it’s been many years since my last encounter with a bean bag – probably a school sports day. But, like all timeless classics, bean bags are still there and still as much fun for children today as they always have been. Here are a few games to play with bean bags that we’ve invented with our little one – you’ll have bags of fun

Firstly, make sure you have some bean bags. You can buy some (e.g. from Amazon) or they are relatively simple to make. If you do make your own, be sure to seal the “beans” are non-toxic and ideally sealed in an internal bag.

Here are our suggestions for some games to play with bean bags.

Angry Bags

We all love playing Angry Birds – but it’s even more fun in real life. Just substitute birds for bean bags and you won’t go far wrong.

How to play Angry Bags

  1. Build a tower – we use Stacking Cups but anything will do!
  2. Each person (parents and babies) take turns to throw (gently) a bean bag at the tower
  3. The winner is the person to knock over the last cup

Bonus game – Re-build the Tower!

Spot the missing bag

Memory games are fun, and an important part of child development. Bean bags are great for playing simple memory games.

How to play

  1. Lay out all the bean bags in a row – it helps if each bag is a different colour.
  2. Ask your child to close their eyes
  3. Put one bag behind your back
  4. Ask your child to open their eyes and say which one has gone

Bonus game: Re-arrange the reaming bags to make it even harder!

Bags on head

Our baby finds it hilarious when we put things on our head, and so very much enjoys putting things there. We find playing this game is a good test of his dexterity, and also the social / communication skills to gesture to us to lower our heads etc.

How to play

  1. Put all the bean bags in a pile by your baby
  2. Show them how to put one gently on your head
  3. Allow them to see how many they can balance on your head

Comet lander

Inspired by the recent success of the Philae lander, recreate the heroic mission in your own living room.

How to play

  1. Find a bucket, basket or ice cream tub to act as the comet
  2. Take it in turns to land (gently) the bean bags (space probes)  on the comet
  3. If you miss, the lander will shoot out into outer-space due to the comets lack of gravity, so just repeat until all landers are safe on / in the comet.

Bonus game – Create a Twitter account for each of your landers and see which one gets the most followers.

Bean bag hide and seek

For slightly older children, hide and seek games provide a fun way to play.

How to play

  1. Give a few bean bags to the child
  2. The child hides the bean bags in a room whilst you are outside – give them 30 seconds to hide them
  3. Enter the room and search for the bean bags
  4. The child can shout “Warmer” / “Colder” as you get nearer / further from one of the bags

We hope you enjoy playing these games. Let us know if you have any favourites!

Yeah, it’s also been really fun just watching him learn to throw! The puzzled look on his face when the bean bag flies out of his hand and disappears behind his head is priceless!
