Starting school is a daunting time for parents and children. It can be a big change from what they’re used to, and it can take a while to settle in. It’s therefore important to prepare your child as best you can ahead of them starting, to give them the best possible start. We’ve found a lovely book which we’ve used to help prepare our little one for school – it’s called “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn. So here is our The Kissing Hand review!
The Kissing Hand Review
The books tells the story of Chester raccoon, who is getting ready to start school. Chester is a little daunted by the prospect of starting school, and so his mother teaches him her special secret – the Kissing Hand.
The Kissing Hand gives Chester the warmth of his mothers love, whenever he may need it. By taking the kissing hand with him to school, he will always have his mothers love.
The book is really touching, especially at the end when Chester gives his mother a kissing hand back, so she will always have his love too. The book is perfectly suited to pre-schoolers, and should be fine for any child over 4 years of age to understand.
The Kissing Hand is beautifully illustrated, with lovely full colour pictures of woodland scenes. The book is illustrated by Nancy M. Leak, and the pictures definitely help bring the story to life. It’s a great bedtime read as well – like all our favourite bedtime books, it features an owl!
When reading it to your child, it gives a good basis for talking about starting school, any concerns or worries. Talking through how Chester might be feeling really helped our son think through what it will be like starting school. Talking through the process of going to school, being away from parents but feeling confident and settled enough is made easier with The Kissing Hand. We have really found the book to be a great help in preparing our child for starting school.
If you like Chester, there is also a lovely cuddly Chester raccoon toy you can get!
